BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
Innervision, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to recording, producing and promoting recording artists: primarily those who are disabled and/or disadvantaged.
Innervision’s geographic focus is within the area of Denver, Colorado and is in
the process of enhancing available services nationwide. Innervision’s
headquarters are located at 1255 Galapago Street, Unit #711, Denver, CO, 80204.
Johnnie Johnson and
Wayne
Turner, both co-directors, founded Innervision in 1991. Both are
visually impaired and have specific and unique knowledge of the video and audio
industry. Their dedication is evident through their sacrifice of time and
personal investment.
Johnson and Turner are known for assisting the community’s youth. They have been
called upon by the ‘Save our Youth’ outreach program to help eliminate gang
violence. They are also regarded as rights advocates of the disadvantaged and
disabled.
For several-years they have worked diligently to educate both the able-bodied
and disabled communities about accomplishments by people who are physically
and/or financially challenged. They have educated the community through such
venues as an interview talk-formatted television show.
In addition, to the Innervision talk show, they have created and produced,
‘Power in Victory’ a TV program that introduces a variety of local and national
recording artists and musicians. The Innervision shows are broadcast four times
a week on Comcast's Denver Cable TV, Channel 57, and statewide on KBDI 12.
Innervision also established a recording studio. Through the establishment of
this recording studio, talented young people and adults can be trained in the
fields of performing and media arts. Innervision has opened doors to local
artists to perform, record and distribute music with very little financial
requirements.
In
conjunction with the internship programs at Metropolitan Sate University and the
Ohio Center of Broadcasting, Innervision provides an educational outlet for
students studying sound and theater. Students can gain real-life knowledge about
the performing arts industry. Students acquire hands-on experience through
operation of equipment during live concerts.
To
date, several albums have been released and are being played on local and
national radio stations. As Innervision expands, more and more requests have
been received regarding involvement in the following, annual, Denver
engagements:
Cinco De Mayo on Santa Fe Street and Lafayette
People’s Fair
The Black Arts Festival
Blind Boys of Alabama at the Arvada Center
Colorado Performing Arts Festival
Junteenth in Five Points in Montbello
Festival of Mountain and Plain
Buskerfest
The LoDo Music Festival and Fiesta, Fiesta!
Community support has recognized the accomplishments of Innervision, Inc.
through several networking partners, commendations from the Mayor’s office and
The American Business Women’s Association award in 1995. (selective support
letters available upon request)
Currently, there are no paid employees. Innervision operates on a daily basis
with 25 volunteers, a number of whom are visually challenged. These volunteers
assist Johnson and Turner with administrative and computer services, production
of public radio shows on KGNU radio in Boulder, Colorado and the training of
performers.
Innervision’s Board of Directors is comprised of individuals that reflect the
diversity of the constituent community and clientele services. This group merges
skills from many disciplines ranging from legal to administrative and community
advocacy infrastructures. The Board meets quarterly to discuss progress of
existing projects and financial records, generates plans for future events and
evaluates year-to-date results.

UNDERSTANDING NEEDS
Many disabled or disadvantaged, talented artists miss the chance to follow their
dreams due to finances and/or low self-esteem. Innervision recognizes this need
and strives to see their dreams become a reality.
Disadvantaged:
Finances – Individuals are not financially comfortable in leaving their
homes and moving to cities that exploit musical gifts. Innervision trains
artists to perform in their communities. Then, they are further prepared for
that chance to be noticed by a record company. Assistance is offered as a
stepping-stone to take them to their next potential level.
Living in low-income neighborhoods makes a person
want to do anything to “GET OUT”. To get out, some turn to gangs and drug
dealers to fund their dreams. We give promising artists a chance to choose the
right path and learn how to work for their success.
Disabled:
Motivation – Some go through life thinking they “should have, would have, could have,” but didn’t. Innervision staff takes out the “Didn’t” and puts in “Did!” The staff at Innervision believes in these artists and gives them that spark of hope and willingness to go the extra mile. They are encouraged to believe that they can do all things if they put their minds to it.
Acceptance – The community
sees individuals for what they “see” and not what they can do. By motivating
these artists they are imparted with self-acceptance. They feel good about
themselves and, in turn, are able to portray a positive attitude in response to
society’s labeling.
