Innervision: Empowering Blind and Disabled Musical Artists through Health, Nutrition, and Wellness

Innervision in 2026 is launching an innovative program designed to teach 300 blind and disabled musical artists the fundamentals of plant-based eating, indoor gardening, and year-round accessible exercise. This project merges health education with creative empowerment—helping participants strengthen their bodies, nourish their minds, and sustain their musical dreams.

Through interactive Zoom workshops and in-person sessions, participants will learn how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables indoors using low-cost, space-saving hydroponic and container gardening systems. Our plant-based cooking demonstrations will show how to prepare nutritious, affordable meals that support energy, immune function, and mental focus—key elements for musicians and performers.

To ensure full inclusion, each class will be audio-described, hands-on, and accessible for people with visual and physical disabilities. Certified plant-based chefs, wellness instructors, and adaptive fitness coaches will guide participants through routines tailored for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility, promoting independence and long-term well-being.

Participants will also track their progress through short video journals, which will be shared on Innervision FM’s podcast and YouTube channel, inspiring others in the blind and disabled community to make positive health changes.

This initiative aligns with Innervision’s mission to help blind and disabled artists become self-sufficient through education, creativity, and health awareness. By combining wellness, sustainability, and music, we aim to create a model for inclusive community learning that empowers individuals to take charge of their health, reduce medical dependency, and thrive physically and artistically.

Together, we can show that when health, creativity, and accessibility meet, independence and opportunity grow year-round—just like the veggies on our windowsills.

* How will Innervision use the $200,000?

The $$$$ grants and donations will be used to cover instructor fees, purchase indoor growing kits for teaching blind and disabled artists how to grow their own produce, obtain membership at a adaptive exercise equipment gym for accessible fitness, and support production costs for creating educational media that promotes year-round health, wellness, and self-sufficiency through Innervision FM’s programs.

Why would receiving your generous donations be critical for our project?

Because it will directly fund essential supplies—indoor growing kits, adaptive exercise tools, and audio-described educational materials—for our next class of blind and disabled artists. This seed funding allows Innervision to continue offering accessible, free workshops that teach plant-based eating, year-round gardening, and fitness to improve health and self-sufficiency in the disabled community.

This project will be led by disabled people that benefit other disabled people!

Innervision is proudly led by blind president Johnnie Johnson, who has directed the nonprofit since 1990. Our project is created by and for disabled people—teaching blind and disabled musical artists about plant-based eating, indoor gardening, accessible exercise, and the business of music and podcasting. It empowers participants to improve health, independence, and career skills while building a stronger disabled creative community.

Innervision will teach our announcers:

  • how to write news copy
  • outlining music breaks
  • when to open the mic for announcements

There is an art to interviewing skills, mic technique, recording voice overs and editing of recordings. Innervision volunteers from the broadcast industry will help in this process as we give our announcers hands-on experience.

Innervision will also train students in marketing and how to create programming which our listeners will find informative and entertaining.

There will also be a talk show podcast for teens and young adults to air weekly. This show will give our listeners a chance to communicate with their peers and audience.

All our equipment is virtual and at our soon-to-be-announced studios will be accessible for the blind!

At the end of these after school classes, our blind announcers will be able to earn revenue for the station and compensation for each of their shows.
